10 Things to Do at the Cottage on Labour Day Weekend

The last long weekend of the summer is upon us. This doesn’t mean the summer is over completely as children go back to school and everyone gets back to a routine. However, making the most of Labour Day weekend at the cottage is important. We have compiled this list of activities as a guide to making the last weekend of the summer count.

Build a fire pit

Check with your local municipality about permits/bans. Bonfires are perfect for late summer / autumn nights at the cottage.

Make a plan for closing down the cottage

I know thinking about closing down the cottage is hard when the weather is still nice. However, being prepared makes life easier when the time comes.

Start a DIY project

It’s never too late to start a summer DIY project at the cottage. Cottage Life is a great resource for inspiration and ideas.

Clean out storage areas

Do you have a closet at the cottage full of stuff you never use? Pull everything out, decide what to keep, what to donate and what to throw away.

Wake up early and watch the sunrise

Early bird gets the worm. Waking up early to watch the sunrise is always rewarding. Take pictures and enter them into our Photo Contest!

Go for a hike

All Trails is a great resource to find trails in your area.

Practice Yoga on the dock

The dock is a peaceful place to practice Yoga, especially early in the morning.

Prepare something special for dinner

This is the last long weekend of the summer. There is no better weekend to impress your friends and family with a special meal. The Food Network Canada has great “Make Ahead” recipes if you don’t want to spend the entire weekend in the kitchen. This is also a great opportunity to clear out your pantry too. This will save you hauling back food that you don’t want to leave at the cottage over the winter.

Finish up yard work or landscaping projects

Clear up fallen branches, pull out weeds before they turn to seed and rake up leaves. Its better to complete these things now as it will be one less chore in the spring.

Spend time out on the water

Whether its a canoe, kayak, power boat, sail boat or stand up paddle board, spend as much time on the water as you can.
