Closing up the cottage can be a daunting task if you are unsure of what needs to be done. Ensuring that your cottage is properly prepared for winter can save you plenty of time and money in the Spring.
TAKE OUT YOUR DOCK AND BOAT LIFT
Tips and storage options for removing your dock was covered in our previous blog. This often the first thing on the list for closing up the cottage and is very important. Water temperatures drop quickly in the autumn so it is important to tackle this early if you do not have the proper apparel.
CLEAN OUT YOUR PANTRY
Don’t leave anything in your pantry to attract unwanted guests over the winter. Empty out your pantry and give it a wipe with cleaner to remove any scents or crumbs.
TURN OFF YOUR WATER
Frozen pipes can cause a lot damage and headaches. Turning the water off and draining any lingering water will avoid burst pipes over the winter and early Spring.
DEFROST THE REFRIGERATOR
This will save hydro over the winter and avoid a smelly refrigerator in the Spring. Leave the door open and place a fresh opened box of baking soda.
TRIM DEAD BRANCHES
Get ahead of Spring clean up by trimming dead branches off of your trees. This will also help avoid damage to the cottage as snow piles up and snaps dead branches.
CLEAN YOUR CHIMNEY
If you have a wood stove and use your cottage in the winter, this is very important. Having a clean and inspected chimney helps lower the risk of an accidental fire.
CLEAN YOUR EAVESTROUGHS
A clean gutter system before Winter ensures no gutter clogs causes damage to your roof and siding.
CHECK YOUR SEPTIC TANKS
Typically septic tanks need to be serviced and emptied every 5 to 8 years depending on use. The Autumn is the best time of year to have it inspected as access is difficult in the Winter. Having it inspected during Autumn ensures that any issues can be dealt with before Spring.
SECURITY
Cover all windows and ensure all locks are working properly. If you have a security system, run any tests to ensure any issues are rectified.
]OUTDOOR FURNITURE AND APPLIANCES
Put away all patio and dock furniture. Clean your BBQ and disconnect your propane tank. Store everything in a sheltered and secure place like a shed or garage.
